A Desert Escape Close to Marrakech
Just 40 minutes from the Red City, the Agafay Desert is Marrakech’s closest desert escape. Instead of golden sand dunes, Agafay is a rocky desert of rolling ochre hills and wide plateaus, with the snow-capped peaks of the High Atlas Mountains on the horizon. It is the ideal choice if you want a real desert experience without the long drive to the Sahara.
Spend the day riding camels, racing quads across the stone dunes, sipping mint tea in a Berber camp and watching the sun set over the Atlas before a candlelit dinner under the stars. If you would rather see tall sand dunes, compare this trip with our Sahara tours to Merzouga.
Day Trip Highlights
- Only about 40 minutes from Marrakech
- A stop at Lalla Takerkoust Lake, with the Atlas Mountains behind

- A camel ride at golden hour

Activities You Can Enjoy in the Agafay Desert
Camel riding is the classic Agafay experience, with short rides of 30 to 60 minutes suitable for all ages. Quad biking and buggy tours offer a more adventurous way to explore, with routes through the hills and wadis. Horseback riding is available for those who prefer a quieter ride, and hot air balloon flights at sunrise give an unforgettable aerial view of the desert and the Atlas Mountains, which can be added as an early-morning option before the day tour.
