🇲🇦 Best place in Morocco: Tangier
Tangier is probably the best major-city choice.
- Totality: about 4 minutes 51 seconds
- Totality begins: ~8:44 am
- Maximum eclipse: ~8:47 am
- Maximum: Sun about 38° above the horizon
- The entire eclipse lasts about 2 hours 20 minutes. Tangier is particularly attractive because you get full totality, while remaining in a large, accessible Moroccan city.
⚠️ Marrakech and Casablanca are NOT in totality
This is an important correction if you’re considering staying farther south:
- Marrakech: ~90% obscuration, but no totality
- Casablanca: ~97% obscuration, but no totality.
- Tangier: 100% — total solar eclipse.
And even 99% is dramatically different from 100%: the spectacular few minutes of darkness, corona and horizon glow happen only during totality.
Where I’d actually go
If you want to stay in Morocco, I’d choose somewhere around Tangier rather than necessarily the city center. The eclipse path extends across northern Morocco, and some locations can get close to five minutes of totality. For example, areas around Tangier show roughly 4:40–4:50+ of totality.
So, my ranking would be:
- 🥇 Tangier / surrounding countryside — best combination of totality, accessibility and scenery
- 🥈 Northern Morocco countryside — potentially excellent if you prioritize maximizing totality
- 🥉 Tetouan area — worth considering depending on the exact location
- Casablanca — impressive partial eclipse, but not total
- Marrakech — impressive partial eclipse, but not total
