The Total Solar Eclipse of 2 August 2027 in Morocco
On Monday 2 August 2027, the Moon will completely cover the Sun along a narrow path that crosses the Strait of Gibraltar.
The total solar eclipse will be visible from northern Morocco. The best places to see it are Tangier, Tetouan and Chefchaouen. In these places totality lasts more than four minutes.

Where to See Totality in Morocco
Totality is visible only inside a narrow band across the north of the country. The nearer you are to the centre line, the longer it lasts.
Tangier and the coast
Totality: about 4 min 51 s, from about 9:44 am.
The centre line passes just south of the city. Tangier is the easiest base, with an airport, ferries from Spain and a high-speed train from Casablanca.
Tetouan and Martil
Totality: about 4 min 50 s.
A smaller, quieter base on the other side of the Tangier peninsula. The coast near Martil is among the best spots in Morocco for the length of totality.
Chefchaouen
Totality: about 4 min 14 s, from about 9:45 am.

The northern countryside
Choose a spot well inside the path.
Durations shrink toward its edges. Look for an open view to the east, because the Sun will be fairly high, and keep your spot flexible.
Marrakech and Casablanca: Partial, Not Total
Rabat, Casablanca, Fes and Marrakech lie south of the path of totality. They see only a partial eclipse.
It is impressive, but even 99% is very different from 100%. The sudden darkness, the corona and the twilight glow on the horizon happen only during totality.

How to Watch the Eclipse Safely
Looking at the Sun without protection can permanently damage your eyes.
Before and After Totality
- Use certified eclipse glasses with the ISO 12312-2 mark.
- Check them for scratches or damage first.
- Do not use ordinary sunglasses. They are not safe.
- Never look at the Sun through a camera, binoculars or a telescope without a certified solar filter.
During Totality
- Only when the Sun is completely covered can you look without protection.
- Put your glasses back on as soon as the first bright sliver of the Sun returns.
- Use a filter on your camera except during totality, or simply enjoy the moment.
- Keep children supervised.

August is high season. Accommodation in Tangier, Tetouan and Chefchaouen is likely to be in demand. Arrange your hotel and transport well ahead, and arrive a few days before 2 August.
Getting there
Tangier has an international airport. Ferries link southern Spain with Tangier, and a high-speed train connects Tangier and Casablanca in about two hours. See getting to Morocco.
Weather and heat
Early August in northern Morocco is often clear and, on the coast, mild. There is no guarantee. Inland Morocco can be very hot, so bring water, sun protection and a hat, and check the forecast in the days before.
Stay flexible
Keep your final viewing point flexible and be ready to move if clouds appear. Expect busy roads on eclipse morning, and arrive at your spot well before totality.
